“Time Zones: 20 Countries in 33 Photos,” by Tom Bartel

An exhibition of photographs by Tom Bartel opens at Icebox Gallery in Minneapolis on March 25. “Time Zones: 20 Countries in 33 Photos” is Bartel’s first gallery show. The selected images were carved from more than 30,000 photos created from all over the world since 2010.

Bartel and his wife, Kristin Henning, have been traveling the world full time for the past seven years.  Combining predominantly color photography with some intense black and white prints, “Time Zones” represents the destinations and interests that have kept Bartel moving: legendary natural scenery, mystical places of worship, young and old personalities, and revealing cultural practices.
Journalism and photography have long been part of Bartel’s life. “My first job in journalism was as a photographer for the news bureau at Carleton College in Minnesota. On the side, I shot the theater’s production photos. All that, of course, was using film and a darkroom.”

Bartel worked as a photographer, sports writer, and editor for a small suburban newspaper before founding the weekly newspaper, City Pages, in 1979. “After becoming a publisher, I pretty much left the photography to others.”

After selling City Pages in 1997, both Bartel and Henning taught journalism at the University of Minnesota. They then founded The Rake magazine, published from 2001-2008, and continued the companion Secrets of the City website until 2010.

In 2010, they decided to sell their home and possessions, and hit the road full time. Since then, they have been writing and photographing the world as they go and publishing their work on a blog called Travel Past 50. (https://travelpast50.com) Since 2010, they have been to more than 60 countries on six continents.

In the foreword to the accompanying “Time Zones” book being released at the opening, Henning describes the impetus for the travels that have inspired this photography exhibit. “It started innocently enough–traveling. We wanted to live someplace else. Beginning in Quito, Ecuador, in 2010, we simply wanted to live small; learn the rhythms of a new neighborhood in a new city.  We didn’t set out to zigzag across six continents, through more than 60 countries in six years. For us, it was one place at a time, and we rarely imagined our next destination.”

Tom said, “I’m particularly excited for this show, because, except for a couple of prints I’ve made for my mother, I’ve only seen these images on a computer screen. I’m really happy to finally see them in print.

Additional special event: “First Thursday” Icebox Gallery will be open until from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.

Regular Gallery Hours:
Thursday and Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 12-5 p.m.
The gallery is also open by appointment.
